10 Best Helmets Money Can Buy

Protect your head with one of these feature-rich helmets

I was young, screaming around the trails by my house on my Yamaha Banshee. I was sporting some sweet gear and the crown jewel was my Bell Helmets Moto 4 Ricky Johnson signature helmet – the coolest helmet ever (yes, I’m that old). I was riding along a trail that was converted rail line, so the ground was crushed rock. I didn’t see the washout until it was too late.

The accident was pretty bad. I had been pulled under the machine in the air and it landed on me, slamming me both into the ground and crushing me under the machine. I was bloodied, mangled and with parts of me that weren’t where they we supposed to be – BUT – I was alive. The helmet had done what it was supposed to do and took the brunt of the impacts to my head. My sweet skid lid was toast, but I lived to buy a new one.

Wear a helmet, plain and simple. It’ll save your life. The helmets available today are so advanced that you really can’t go wrong. Find one that fits right, is in your budget and have at it. Any helmet is better than no helmet, but here are the 10 best helmets money can buy.

It's funny how we'll drop almost $1,000 on new tires and rims, but most guys wouldn't think of blowing $250 on a helmet. I admit to being one of them, starting out on a $40 cheap one when I got back into riding ATVs after a 15+ year absence from the sport. The first helmet I bought was way back in '93 when I bought my first ATV, a Kawasaki Mojave 250. It was a really nice ventilated Shoei that cost me around $260. Wish I could justify buying another one from this list.

I finally figured out that I have a "long oval" head, and most helmets are "round."
I could ride in comfort for about 50 minutes, but after 60 minutes I had a screaming headache and a big, red spot on my forehead. Finally got sense enough to do some research online, and discovered there are different Profiles for helmets! Who'd a thunk it? Did more research, and found that the $8 million Arai helmets (kidding!) are NOT the only mfr. who make long-oval-shaped lids. I wound up buying a plain, white Icon helmet and it is WONDERFUL! Great airflow, too. Now it's only my back and wrist that get sore after an hour or so on the motorcycle!
