Welcome Hillbillyracing55. First, is your felt pad all wadded up? If it is, you can remove it, and the steering will get somewhat better. Basically, the steering sliders wears out, and needs replacement. Click the forum tab, and scroll down to the Supporting Vendors section. Find AJS SXS Accessories, and give Andy a call. He might still have a slider, he was making them. Good luck.
on the ends of the gear inside the rack and pinion are plastic bushings that are held in place by two metal screws about 5/8" long. The work them selves loose and fall out and prevent you from turning lock to lock. There is also a rubber gasket the wads up and binds as well. The steering cable also benefits from a few zirk fittings allowing the cable to be greased. The slider AJ no longer produces due to cost....however he makes the mount and rubuilds the rack and pinion boxes. MLS still produces the slider. There is a guy in Wisconsin that makes a bolt in kit based off a saco rack using stock tie rods that sells at a very reasonable price as well. So you have some options. That guy is on the facebook wildcat site. Best of luck.
There are a couple of videos on ajswildcataccessories.com that show how the rack and pinion steering box and the slider fit together. I would suggest that you watch those videos, then start investigating to see exactly where your steering is broken.
Some obvious failure points are the peg that connects the steering box to the slider, the pinion gear and rack inside the steering box and the flex shaft. There is also a coupler that links the end of the flex shaft to the input shaft of the steering box. Work your way from the front toward the steering wheel until you find something that turns that is connected to something that doesn't turn, then at least you will know what questions to ask as far as fixing it.
It is in the Wildcat Riders Facebook group. I tried searching for the exact post, but there are too many to sift through. Maybe Phatcat will come up with the name.
