DEADWOOD IS BASECAMP FOR YOUR NEXT OFF-ROAD ADVENTURE
Your next off-road adventure is just around the bend and Deadwood is the perfect basecamp to get things revved up. From here, you’ll have access to nearly 700 miles of designated trails connected by 3,600 miles of unpaved roads in the Black Hills National Forest. There are currently 21 designated motorized trailheads in the forest and almost half of them are within a half-hour of city limits. The trail system opens on May 15.
Tread LIGHTLY
Having off-road access to the Black Hills National Forest is a right that no off-roader wants to jeopardize. That’s why it’s important for all trail goers to ride responsibly so this picturesque landscape can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Here are a few do’s and don’t for your next trail riding adventure:
- Do know and understand all travel regulations
- Do stay up to date on any closures and restricted areas that may exist
- Don’t ride without a permit
- Do minimize your impact on the environment
- Do stay on marked trails at all times
- Don’t enter sensitive areas prone to damage and rutting
- Do educate yourself and be respectful of other riders
- Don’t enter private property with explicit permission
No RIDE? No PROBLEM!
The area around Deadwood is home to many motorsport outfitters who offer a variety of ATVs and UTVs to rent. Most of these businesses are operated by avid off-roaders happy to share local knowledge to make the most of your day. If you plan to rent, plan ahead and make reservations well in advance of your arrival.
Be sure to get a Trail PERMIT
If you have your own off-road vehicle, you’ll need a permit. Permits may only be purchased online or from a local vendor. There are two types of permits available: Annual and 7-day Motorized Trail Permits. If you are renting a UTV from an outfitter, this is not a concern. Rented off-road vehicles from an outfitter will already have a permit.
STAY in Deadwood and PLAY in the Hills!
Many off-road vehicles are legal to ride on roads and highways in South Dakota, except for interstates. The vehicles must be licensed by the state of South Dakota and have basic safety components before becoming road legal. South Dakota is one of 36 states that allow on-road ATV use in some form, and its laws are among the least restrictive in the nation. When on a road or highway, the driver must have a valid driver’s license and carry insurance.

 PRESENTATION THURSDAYS
REMEMBER CHRISTMAS?
Thursday, May 5, 2022
The presentation by South Dakota Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau Scholar Phyllis Schrag is a sequel to If You Have to Grow Up, It Might as Well Be in a Small Town and Baseball, Preachers, and Funerals. This "storytelling" type lecture is a humorous yet poignant look at small town life in winter and especially around Christmas. There is the annual Christmas Eve church program presented by the Sunday school children, the caroling, and the famous Christmas sack of peanuts and hard candy. The reminisces include a poignant story of a special and unusual Christmas gift. Audiences who have enjoyed the previous two programs will find this a nostalgic trip back in time. However, it can serve as a stand-alone program for any audience. Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center; 12:00 p.m. The event is free.
