Good news/bad news: The good news is Pennsylvania has opened up several hundred miles of riding just across the NY border from me. The bad news is it's almost totally a mix of paved and dirt roads. It's not REALLY bad news, I'm grateful to be able to take a long-distance trip on my SxS right from my driveway! I made a few trips there last summer, and I can actually see the wear on my Maxxix Bighorns every time I get back home! We're planning on riding in that area a lot this summer, so I'd like to buy another set of wheels and tires to put on when we go there, and save my Bighorns for when we're going to go play in the mud. Obviously, traction is not a major issue for that situation, but I'd like something that will work for loose dirt or a bit of mud if we should run through some. My Bighorns are 28x12x12 all around. I'd like to keep the same size on all four corners so I can rotate them for wear. I'd also like to stay with 28" diameter, but I'm good with going to 14" rims. I know there's a much bigger tire selection in 28"x14" I'd like a decent riding tire too. Fussy, aren't I??!! All suggestions are welcome!

Bighorns are a soft tire, they wear quickly. Out this way, a lot of us run Tensors for desert, rocks or hard pack type terrain. They wear like steel. But, and there’s always abut, LOL, is that they are heavier than most other tires. I would suggest comparing the weight of a same size Tensor to a Bighorn. If the weight difference isn’t bad, and your Trail can turn them, you might want to give them a look.

Brettm57, I'm in New York, where in PA are these trails open?
Potter County, PA. It also spreads out into Tioga County and south of Potter County (I can't think of the name of that county!). It's several 100 miles of riding. Like I said, it's almost all roads - not my favorite riding - but it sure seems nice to be able to go someplace and take a long ride.

Ive been using the BFG mud T/A tires for a good 3 years now.. been wearing great.. sounds like we pretty much do the same type of riding and use of rigs..the only rig that Ive seen wear happening is on the turbo rig..seems to have some extra rear spinning going on now..

I'm leaning toward the BFG's myself. They look like the best tire for my type of riding.

It's funny you mentioned the Tensor tires. I just put new ones on my Trail. And now putting a Dalton clutch kit in. Like you said they are a little heavier of a tire and I did lose some top end, but go down road very nice!

I think I'm going to go with the Tusc Terrabite in a 27x9x12 all around, and use the 12" rims I have. I'm only giving up 1/2" of ground clearance and I won't have to buy rims. I posted this same question on the Wildcat Riders FB page and the Terrebite was recommended by several different people. After thinking about it some more, I never go anywhere where the traction of the Bighorns is needed any more, so I'll save myself the expense of buying another set of wheels. Plus, I can put the Bighorns up for sale and recoup some of my money for the Terrabites.
