Where can you purchase just the outer rear cv joint? I believe it's an all balls 8 ball extreme a xle currently there, though not certain

That might be a hard find, especially being uncertain of brand or type. Most aftermarket axles are complete and made in an offshore factory. Other than boot kits, there usually isn't anything available for individual parts. Replacing the axle complete will likely be your best possible route with the least amount of frustration.
