Drock has proven you can pull start the Trail with a cord - There's a video he put out on it last year.

 

 

Pull start may not work if battery is stone dead, im not sure if the trail can generate enough juice to power the coils just by pulling and i havent tested it to confirm either way. I do know however that if there is life in the battery that it can be pull started pretty easy, pretty sure i could do it with my belt if i had too.

 

Yeah, powering the coils is only half the problem, you also have to have enough juice to power the fuel pump, ECU and injectors...

it is good to know that this can be done.. Looks like you might even be able to do it with the belt out of your pants in an emergency...

fuel pump and injectors we can work around but never know whats going on in that ecu. I carry a can of starter spray in my old foreman, if it wont run when you spray that in the intake then its not going to run at all.

 

Pull start is awesome. Thanks for the info guys I feel better knowing this. Dual batteries, strap, starter fluid. After all that start hiking. But now I have more ways to get going again

Im happy to know i can start it with a strap but it sure would be nice to have a back up. Even if my battery is toast, i hopefully have someone with me that has a battery big enough to power the electronics, doesnt have to roll over the engine, i can do that part.

 

I'm counting on this to do the trick... Even if the starter is smoked, this would be more than enough juice to get my Grasshopper Hoppin!!!

I wonder if you taped 8 AA batteries together if youd get enough juice to fire the electronics and then pull start it? Obviously not enough to turn over the engine but may be the ticket for the electronics.

 

I think you're going to need something that will pull at least 10 amps for whatever time it's going to take you to get back to civilization.. If you start running the voltage low, current draw will go up and bad things start to happen then. If the ECU is smart enough, it will shut down the fuel pump when the voltage drops below a specific threshhold, but I have no idea what that is or if it has that capability...

 

In all the years that I have been off-roading I have found that the #1 thing to bring along is ANOTHER VEHICLE.

 

#2 Jumper cables
#3 tow strap
#4 100 lbs of tools and spare parts

I can verify that if the battery is bad... the machine will jump start but won't run very far before crapping out...been there - left the machine went to town and bought new battery at batteries plus.
