Muzzys exhaust system for the Trail?

I know there has been a lot of talk on here about different exhaust slip-ons. What I'm very interested in, is the Muzzy's complete exhaust system. I like the idea it comes with a new tuned equal length header and muffler. There's not much information on there web site as far as dyno results, hp rating, db's over stock. As soon as my Trail is off warranty, I'm looking at doing some performance mods and the Muzzy exhaust system looks very good because it's a complete system. Has anyone installed this exhaust on their Trail? If so what are your thoughts as far as sound (db's over stock), performance (seat of the pants), does anyone have any hp numbers? If any venders that sells Muzzy could post any info that would be great. I also see they have a Digi-tune fuel tuner, but no listing for the Trail. Any info would be great.

Theres a lot of Can Ams with muzzy, its louder but builds decent HP from talking to guys out on the trails.. but the V twins sound Bad to the bone.. Have you seen any photos of the complete system. does it get the header away from the fire wall...

I love Muzzy exhaust, have used them on several machine... seems they over inflate performance numbers sometimes though. One thing is for sure though, they build the cleanest looking highest qaulity exhaust on the market.IMO

There's pics on the Muzzy website. Very nice looking piece.

I had a Muzzy equal length header system on my Kawasaki Prairie. It sounds awesome on the V twin. Verified more hp on the dyno.

Dang header still up against firewall not much wiggle room with the 700cc it looks..Very nice looking exhaust.

Yeah, I see it still runs close to the firewall, but I would probably wrap it anyway.

Ok guys, here are some pics I took from my install. I know I have commented on different threads about the Muzzy exhaust, but this is my original thread I started, so any future info or updates I have will be on here. Anyone with any mechanical ability could do this in a weekend. There is obviously more work then installing a slip-on muffler, but I think it'll be worth it. I also installed a Dobeck AFR+ fuel tuner while I had it torn apart. Just a side note, after reading through the tuning instructions and then reading DRocks thread explaining how to program it, DRock really explains it in a way anyone should be able understand. So thanks DRock for taking the time to do that. The first couple of pics I mocked it up to see where I needed to start my wrap. The next two are after I wrapped and installed it. Then pics of the tuner I bought from Muzzy and where I mounted the gauge. The routing of the harness is real easy with everything torn down like I had it. I just ran everything along the factory harness. I took some pics trying to show the amount of space between the header and firewall, but it was hard to get the proper angle. I took some measurements and the closest it comes to the firewall is about 2 in. So with it being wrapped and that kind of clearance, heat and melting should no longer be an issue. I used DEI Titanium exhaust wrap w/LR technology(part#01032 from Summit), because it had a higher heat rating then the wrap they had in the kit.

Question on the Dobeck install? Are you running only the wide band sensor....or are you running the narrow and wide band sensors? There has been some confusion about that in threads I've read. Is it simply a sensor swap...or are you having to install the wideband as a second sensor? Thanks for any advice you can lend.

I must have ran out of room for the first post, so I'll finish up here. First pic is where I installed the air/fuel gauge. Then the clearance pic. The final two are with everything back together. I need to give a shout out to Chris (and Crystal) at Devious Power Sports, where I purchased the exhaust and tuner. They answered all my numerous questions promptly and handle any concerns quickly. So if your looking to purchase this set-up, I would highly recommend contacting Chris and getting a quote, they'll take good care of you. (and they have awesome stickers!!) If you have any questions about the install ask away. I'm working on a sound clip video, anyone that has posted a video clip please let me know the best way to take one. I know they never seem to sound the same as being there, but something would be better then nothing. I've only had it running in the shop, but it sounded very throaty. I don't think it sounded much louder then stock, just a deeper tone. I don't have any official db numbers, but from what I was told it was the same or close to the stock db's. I won't be able to trail test it until the trails open around Memorial weekend. I'll revisit this thread after that weekends ride and give my updated report then. You can set it up with different configurations. You can run it straight through, with the quiet core, spark arrester screen or any combination there of. They explain it all in the instructions. Well that about wraps it up, like I said I'll answer any questions you have the best I can.

Awesome, thanks Pete. Looks great.

Most awaited sound clip in sound clip history. ;-) Does it pretty much sound like the rest of the exhausts out there for the trail? I'm thinking that little twin just has a sound to it, no matter what pipe or muffler you put on it. :-(

To be honest with you, it does sound like some of the other slip-on mufflers I've heard on youtube. Like I said, it does have a nice deep throaty sound to it. I don't know if a video sound clip will do it justice, but I'll get one posted as soon as I can.

I love the Christmas wrap job - thermotech on the firewall and wrapping the headers which look great too. I doubt you will ever have any heat issues there in the back. Is it me or did you not put the heat shield back on?
What AFR box is that? Wondering if I can just get Evo's or someone's air filter box change w/auto AFR box when the time comes - I was looking at the PC5 & Doebeck for AFR box .

They do not have you use the heat shield with their pipe. With the wrap and clearance you get with the way they route the pipe you wouldn't need it anyway. It is a Dobeck Gen 4 AFR+ tuner. The reason I went that route, I can change the settings to match whatever performance parts I install at a later date. I looked at the EVO exhaust, air filter and ecm reflash as a complete set-up. I decided to go the route I did because I didn't want my ecm stuck with one setting, because then I wouldn't have any flexibility for future changes.

Just looked on the site, surprised at the price. For some reason i thought it would be more for a complete system. Did you request they weld in an extra O2 bung or is that the way it came?

#19 ·
I was surprised too, so I just had to go with there set-up and the Dobeck AFR+ tuner they also sell. I think the black is pretty nice looking and it won't catch the lawman's eye so easily. I posted some pics of what was in the kit in another exhaust post, but yes the collector pipe had both O2 bungs already in it. They supplied plugs incase you didn't have a tuner yet.

I wanted to add these pics that I took of what comes in the Muzzy exhaust kit. I posted them on a different exhaust thread and wanted to add them to my Muzzy thread.

I'm still working on that, hoping to have that for you guys by this weekend.

Havent quite seen how the header attaches to the engine, is it bolted or held with springs? Just have one concern with their O2 bung placement. Not sure how much of a difference it makes but according to dobeck the bung should be located a few inches from the head for most accurate reading and placing it right before the muffler could allow for inaccurate reading due to being closer to open air. I question that logic since exhaust is always flowing out and atmospheric pressure wont overcome exhaust flow but i tried to stick to what was recommended. Im sure Muzzy knows what they are doing im just a little picky.

They are held on with springs. The kit comes with two flanges and what they call spigots that the pipes slip into, then held on with springs. If you look at the first picture that I took of the kit, you'll see the two flanges and then the spigots next to them in a plastic bag. As far as the O2 bung placement, I imagine Muzzy would place it in the proper place for their exhaust system. I looked at the stock exhaust and they place their O2 after the collector, just like the Muzzy collector places the factory O2 sensor. I think their placement of the wideband O2 should work fine, it's similar to how cars and trucks place theirs, just in a much smaller scale.

When i welding in my O2 bung for the dobeck i put it just after the factory narrow band. Not sure how i feel about having my header held on by springs. How solid does it feel. I guess if i was really worried about it i could weld the spigots to the header pipe for a more permanent install. I just worry about header leaks or corrosion around what is basically a slip joint.

After I got it all buttoned up it felt very solid. They are a very snug fit without the springs, so with the springs on, there not going anywhere. I was very impressed with the overall quality of the fit and finish of their exhaust system. They definitely put some time into designing this.

No experince with the Muzzy or this type of header connection but if they are all like it then it cant be that bad. Like i stated earlier, if it wasnt right i cant see Muzzy putting it out there. Can anyone else chime in on this, someone with some experience with Muzzy headers?

I have no where to ride right now until the trails open in the spring. I'm waiting for DRock to get back to me with his settings for the Dobeck tuner so at least I'll have a good starting point until I can fine tune it in the spring. I'll post my trail review after the Memorial Day weekend. I know it's a long time to wait, but it's harder for me because I want to see what she's got!! :racer:

Yeah forgot last night, actually i remembered but it was too cold and wet to walk to the garage haha. Only time i dont mind cold and rain is if im hunting something and thats pretty much done for this year.

No problem, whenever you can would be great.

So........ how much more does the header help on performance and horse power? It looks like you can get the slip-on for three hundred dollars cheaper than the full system. Sounds like a lot more money if it doesn't help performance much.

If its stainless steel its going to last forever, the OEM steel header is go have a limited life.
